NEGATIVE SPACE

It is the space around the object that you are looking at, minus the object… which means that your eyes study only the outline of the object.

It is simpler to read into such a portrayal of an object, since the details inside the object are no longer valid. The outline becomes the singular element of visual communication with the object. Depending on how the object is posed and from what perspective it is looked at, the outline either enhances the clarity of the character of the object or vice versa.

Which one of these frames would you prefer to use in your board?

The frame on the right is a easily a better choice !

In the above images, each has a corresponding image below, rendered as  an outline... the space that the shaded outline does not occupy is the NEGATIVE SPACE of the object in the frame. Because of this space, the chocolate bar stands out and is more readable as against the frame on the left where it is crowded by other details which are arround the chocolate bar.
